Physical Exams Q&A

Why do I need physical exams?

Physical exams are medical appointments that you schedule routinely, even if you’re feeling well and have no underlying medical issues. The purpose of the exam is to identify potential health conditions in the earliest stages before you have symptoms.

Early identification of certain diseases helps you get the treatment you need to recover. In many cases, starting treatment early increases the likelihood that treatment will be successful.

When do I need to schedule a physical exam?

The team at Applewood Chiropractic recommends scheduling routine physical exams annually. If you have existing health issues, you may need to schedule additional checkups more frequently throughout the year.

You may also need a physical exam before starting a new job or participating in sports. The goal of specialized physicals is to ensure you’re healthy enough to perform the required tasks of the job or sport.

Many sports groups, schools, and other organizations require that you have a recent physical as part of their registration process. The team at Applewood Chiropractic also confirms that you don’t have underlying health issues that can interfere with your safety and can provide the documentation you need to show you’re in good health.

What happens during physical exams?

During your physical exam, the team at Applewood Chiropractic spends time reviewing your personal and family medical history. That helps them identify potential risk factors that can affect your health or increase your risk for chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension).

The team then physically examines your body, testing your muscle strength and evaluating your joint flexibility. They also assess important details about your health, such as your:

  • Weight
  • Height
  • Lung function
  • Heart rate
  • Blood pressure
  • Body temperature

You can also expect them to check your abdomen for swelling or other abnormalities that need further testing.

If you have risk factors for certain conditions, the providers may request bloodwork to check your cholesterol and your blood glucose (sugar) levels and to ensure there are no signs of infection or other health issues.

If it’s been longer than a year since your last physical, call Applewood Chiropractic today to schedule a physical exam or book an appointment online.
