Sports Physicals Q&A

What are sports physicals?

A sports physical is an exam that helps determine whether you or your child is healthy enough to play certain sports. Many states require children and teens to undergo a sports physical before participating in competitive sports. Many adults also seek an exam when starting a new type of exercise, such as running or cycling.

Why are sports physicals important?

Sports physicals identify changes to your health that might impact your athletic performance. They also help detect complications that might endanger your health during sports. For example, if you have high arches, your feet are more likely to roll inward when you run. That instability can lead to ankle sprains.

By identifying high arches during a sports physical, the team at Applewood Chiropractic can create an individualized treatment plan to protect your feet and ankles.

What happens during sports physicals?

All physicals have two main components: a medical history review and a physical exam. The goal of a sports physical is to assess your health and identify concerns that may interfere with your ability to play sports.

Medical history review

During a medical history review, the team checks for any illnesses you’ve had in the past that might impact your physical health. They also ask you about chronic conditions and illnesses in your family, such as asthma or diabetes.

Past injuries can continue to affect your performance long after you recover, so it’s important that your chiropractor makes note of any you’ve experienced.

Finally, your chiropractor asks about any concerning symptoms you’ve experienced while exercising, such as dizziness or chest pain, and makes note of your past and current medications.

Physical exam

During the physical portion of your exam, the team records your height and weight, checks your vitals, and listens to your heart and lungs. They also evaluate your posture and flexibility. The team then uses strength tests to assess your muscle and joint health.

Once the team completes your exam, they may offer recommendations to protect your health, such as:

  • Exercises
  • Stretches
  • Custom-made orthotics
  • Supplements or medication
  • Additional testing
